It helped the former Frou Frou songbird land a major label deal just in time for the release of her second solo CD, a mostly terrific collection of synth-pop that employs strings, harps and bells as convincingly as drum machines and Vocoder samples. second season finale was a stroke of luck for Imogen Heap. Having one of her best songs played over the end credits of The O.C. Of particular note is a cover of Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings” featuring Levert’s own father Eddie Levert, of O-Jays fame.Īll-in-all, a nice collection for a romantic evening. ![]() The album contains selections spanning his solo career, so there is a wide range of musical styles. In the early ’90s he started releasing solo albums, and now brings us Voices, a soulful and passionate collection of some of his most notable duets from his career.įeaturing a bevy of guest appearances, Levert is joined by the artists such as Yolanda Adams on a zealous cover of R. In the 1980s, Gerald Levert founded the group Levert. Fans of Black 47 will be pleased with Elvis Murphy’s Green Suede Shoes, while new listeners may only get into parts of it. “The Bells Of Hell” sounds as though it were written for Rocky by Meatloaf himself. On the other end of the scale, there are far too many songs on this album with a Rocky Horror Picture Show vibe. Somewhat rushed, but also somewhat Dylan-esque, is the politically-charged Downtown Baghdad Blues - a song about a young American soldier stuck fighting in Iraq - featuring lyrics like, “20 years old, I can kill but I can’t buy a beer.” The Irish influence is apparent in the musical assembly of songs like “Liverpool Fantasy,” a short but bittersweet lilting ballad. Released as a companion album to lead singer Larry Kirwan’s written memoir Green Suede Shoes, this album is an eclectic mix of Black 47’s traditionally Irish-American in New York City sound. Until then, Swell is an easy listen sure to leave you bobbing in your seat. With a little bit more time to gel together, the jams are sure to grow to be bigger and better. After a double listen, I say stick with these guys. While the album doesn’t seem to progress as the songs roll out, it works just fine because they offer their finest at the door.
